Making the tea in the desert. Sahara Desert, Mauritania, West Africa

This is a photograph taken in the morning with my hired cameleer and guide making breakfast and pouring tea.

This was a week long camel trek between two remote towns in the Mauritanian desert. A very relaxing experience….and the tea was delicious…If anyone is looking for a relaxing couple of weeks…fly to Atar in Mauritania from Paris and get to chinguetti…from there just hire a guide and a couple of camels and walk back to Atar…..Travel writers try to make this kind of thing sound arduous and difficult…but it is really pleasant and relaxing.

My guide baked the bread that you can see by burying it in the sand under hot coals and leaving it over night… in the morning, perfect bread!

Thanks for the comment! Photo was taken with a compact camera with a tilt and twist rear screen, allowing me to get that angle above my head and compose the image.

Thanks very much. Yes the trek was great. And extremely relaxing, just sitting there sipping tea in the coolness of the desert air (February=cool mornings). Highly recommended!

Thanks! Yes the tea making ceremony is an important part of the culture in this part of the world. It’s a chance just to stop, get out of the sun and rest up.

That sounds like a fantastic way to get away from it all and spend a couple of weeks, and this shot is really strong for the creative angle you’ve chosen. Very nicely done.

The camels pov! I never thought of that…maybe the camel is eyeing up the bread or wants a cup of tea!! Otherwise it’s just dried grass again!

Wow, to me this sounds like an epic adventure on the grandest scale! I love your inventive high point of view, using the sand as background for the striking colors and textures. Fantastic shot!
